I recently transitioned from accounting assistant with the University Libraries to accounting technician with the Nevada System of Higher Education Payroll Office. My accounting experience dates back to 2021 when I secured a position at a local tax accounting firm doing bookkeeping, taxes, and payroll. Accounting isn’t the most attractive role to many, but to me I find accounting to be stimulating and rewarding. I am going to share a little bit about my background, and I’ll let you know where I am planning for accounting to take me.

In 2021, I was on my last year for my undergraduate degree in business. I secured a position with a local tax accounting firm doing bookkeeping, taxes, and payroll. My experience working at the local tax firm was great, I picked up hands-on skills, and I was able to test the waters. My accounting experience grew and I wanted to learn more, making a move from tax firm to the University Libraries at UNR.

In 2023, I became a part of a much larger organization, the University Libraries. I automatically made myself at home and grew my position more than it was supposed to be. Aside from the accounting aspect of the role which was budget management, purchasing, asset management, and grants, I took on leadership roles such as running meetings, being a part of a committee, and chairing a university-wide board. I challenged myself and I was rewarded, after a few years with the University Libraries I was promoted to accountant technician with the Payroll Office.

In the present year, I have transitioned to the Payroll Office that overlooks payroll for the entire Nevada System of Higher Education. Aside from moving from an office to a cubicle environment, this move was necessary for career progression. Payroll is a fundamental business function that keeps organizations running all year long. I am excited to see what the rest of the year has in store.

I have continuously built my background in accounting by laying down the foundation starting at the local tax accounting firm. Tacking on experience with the University Libraries plus gaining leadership skills. The Payroll Office will indeed foster those skills I have already gained plus will add-on additional experience preparing me for future roles. While gaining experience, I continue to strive for my educational goals working on my master’s in business administration. Accounting might not be the most attractive to most people, but to me accounting is a strong passion that I continue to pursue.
